How to fix a mistake in a video without re-recording everything
You are 50 seconds into a good take and you mangle one sentence. The usual options are bad ones: start again and lose your energy, or keep going and live with the error. There is a third option that professionals use all the time: redo only that sentence and join it to the rest. This guide shows how to record so that this works, how to make the join look natural and how sentence retakes work in Telepromptia.
Method 1: record in short takes
The simplest way to avoid redoing a whole video is to never record a whole video. Split the script at natural breaks, roughly every two to five sentences, and record each piece separately. A mistake now costs you ten seconds. It also keeps your energy up, because every take starts fresh.
The cost is the joins. Between takes you must keep the conditions the same, which is covered below.
Method 2: keep going and redo the line
Many presenters record straight through and fix errors on the spot. When you stumble, stop speaking, hold still for a second or two, then say the sentence again from its beginning and carry on. The pause creates a clean gap that is easy to find and cut afterwards, and you never leave the flow of the take.
Always restart at the beginning of a sentence, not in the middle of it. A cut inside a sentence is far harder to hide than a cut between two sentences.
Make the join less noticeable
No cut is perfectly invisible, but you can make most of them hard to spot.
- Keep the same position. Do not move the phone, and do not shift your seat between takes.
- Keep the same posture and head angle. Look at where your head was when the last good take ended.
- Match the energy. Take a breath and begin the retake as if you were continuing the sentence before it.
- Hold the light constant. Daylight changes quickly. A cloud or a few minutes can make a visible difference.
- Cut at a pause. Cut at the end of a sentence or at a natural breath, never during a word.
- Mind the sound. Room tone and distance to the microphone should be the same on both sides of the cut.
Choose between hiding the cut and showing it
In short-form video, jump cuts are normal and viewers expect them. If you cut quickly and keep the picture steady, a small jump looks like style, not an error. In longer, calmer videos, it can be better to cut to a different framing, a graphic or a screen recording at the join. Pick one approach and use it consistently.
How sentence retakes work in Telepromptia
Telepromptia's MagicRetake feature, which is part of Pro, is built for exactly this situation.
- Record your take as usual while reading the script.
- When a sentence goes wrong, choose that sentence and record it again.
- Telepromptia keeps your other takes and replaces only the part you redid.
- In OneTake Studio, the takes are assembled into one video that you can preview, pick the best take for each sentence, trim the cuts and shorten long pauses.
The cuts are synchronised, with a very short volume dip at each join to avoid clicks. That makes the file valid and the timing tight. Whether a cut looks natural still depends on how well the takes match, which is why the advice above applies here too. If a join needs a nudge, you can adjust the cut points by hand.
On the free plan, you can re-record by starting a take over. Sentence retakes, automatic assembly and pause shortening are Pro features.
When the wording is the problem
Sometimes the mistake is not a slip of the tongue but a sentence that is wrong or unclear. Fix the script first, then re-record only that sentence. If the new wording is much longer or shorter, check the sentences on either side: pronouns such as "it" and "this", and examples that referred to the old line, may no longer fit. When a change touches several sentences, record them together as one new take instead of patching them one by one.
What to avoid
- Changing your outfit, glasses or hair between takes.
- Moving the phone, even slightly, or switching between front and rear cameras.
- Recording the retake much later, in different light.
- Rewriting the sentence during the retake. If you change the wording, check that the sentences before and after it still connect.
- Cutting in the middle of a word, which is the most obvious edit there is.
Check the result
Watch the assembled video from start to end once, with headphones on. Listen to each join for breaths, clicks and changes in tone. Then look at it with the sound off to catch jumps in position. If you find a join that bothers you, re-record that sentence one more time, or move the cut to a different pause.
